Iron Butterfly “Scorching Beauty”
1973 Color Pencil & Airbrush on Board 30” x 30”
I was a huge “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” fan, so needless to say, when we got this Iron Butterfly cover assignment, I was completely elated. Drew did this amazing painting of a very sexy gold-plated woman floating in a vibrant blended color background. The female figure in this piece was largely influenced by the futuristic robot in Fritz Lang’s silent film classic… "Metropolis."
This piece is Struzan’s first attempt at adding airbrush to his repertoire, so he restricted its use to the large blended background, while relying on his true comfort level with Prismacolor pencils and acrylic for the butterfly figure.
Once the figure was finished, he illustrated a Black line art grid that was then converted to a film positive overlay which created the background pattern. If you look closely at her lower stomach area you will see the grid reflected in it. This detail was done in advance to further the grids believability once combined.
